Aldershot Town 5 - 0 Northwich Victoria

The Shots ran in a five-star show to go top billing in the Blue Square Premier, but that will be little comfort to Neil Redfearn.

He won't be permitted too many performances like this.

After a circumspect opening, when Vics looked compact but unthreatening, his tactics were left in tatters by the early loss of skipper Simon Rusk and, barely thirteen minutes later, Michael Welch.

The latter was left the field on a stretcher after lying pole axed following a collision that left him with a damaged shoulder and cut mouth that required an overnight stay in hospital.

That second twist of fate proved a catalyst for the capitulation came soon afterwards.

Almost immediately after Welch had left the field Lewis Chalmers launched a trademark long throw into the box and Rhys Day duly powered a header into the top corner.

Michael Coulson did his best to inspire a comeback with a pacy run down the left channel and delivered a threatening low cross that forced Scott Davies into a sliced clearance that just cleared his own bar.

Yet the youngster, on loan from Barnsley, was guilty of an horrendous miss seconds later.

Debutant James Scales, who had replaced Rusk, broke up an Aldershot attack and sent Maylett clear down the right flank and, with the home defence floundering, he squared a pass to the unmarked Coulson. The 20-year-old shot against the outside of the post from nine yards with the goal at his mercy.

It was a expensive error.

An example of the overall difference in quality was immediately emphasized when from an identical distance Scott Davies thrashed an unstoppable shot into the top corner of the net.

With the omens looking worrying, Rob Elvins forced a save from Ben Connett on the stroke of half time.

Vics opened the second period by using their final substitution as Chris Williams replaced Maylett.

In the 50th minute Nikki Bull made his first effective save from Dino Maamria's header but it was not long before Connett was again forced into action with a full-length save to deny Ben Harding.

He followed that up with an even better stop to thwart Elvins from close range.

Vics best hope of contriving a comeback appeared to be through Coulson, and another run down the left was eventually curtailed by a positive dash from his goal by the home keeper.

From the corner kick the unmarked Wilson might have done better then volley high and wide at the far post.

The lively Elvins cut inside from the right and, with Vics struggling to clear his cross, Davies lashed a second unstoppable shot into the top corner.

Vics' heads clearly went down both on and off the field at that point.

A fourth goal arrived two minutes later when the Shots again exposed a glaring weakness down the Vics to allow Rob Gier to deliver a measured far post cross from which John Grant scored with a perfectly placed header.

Elvins and then Grant both took turns to expose struggling Kevin Sharp and, from their resultant crosses, Grant headed onto the roof of the net and then Connett continued his individual dual with Elvins to keep out his close range header.

Typically Michael Carr refused to submit and he had a shot saved while Williams, showing some signs of a return to form, cut in menacingly to shoot narrowly wide.

Otherwise it was one-way traffic.

Elvins went close from the edge of the box before Connett again proved his nemesis with another quality save.

Coulson remained Vics' best attacking threat and he worked a further opening down the left that found Greg Strong who might have scored had his effort not rebounded fortuitously off the keeper and onto the underside of the bar.

There was an inevitability that Elvins would claim his first goal for his club and, after Connett had been adjudged to have collected a back pass, the young striker pierced a goalline Vics wall with a well-struck free kick.

STAR MAN: 1-Ben Connett - Despite conceding five goals the keeper could be blamed for none and several quality saves probably saved his colleagues from further embarrassment.
