Aldershot Town’s Wembley hopes were smothered beneath a red and white blanket, as Rotherham United once again had too much quality for their frustratingly lack-lustre opponents. Goals from Adam Le Fondre and Kevin Ellison put the gloss on another impressively solid team performance, but it was The Millers’ back four who deserve the plaudits, proving a superbly-marshalled and ultimately impenetrable barrier over 180 minutes. Aldershot lacked the necessary quality in both penalty areas, to combat an obdurate back-four and stop poacher-supreme Le Fondre from adding to his first leg winner. It was a forlorn hope and, very soon, a lost cause, but the 707 travelling supporters refused to be silent, despite Rotherham’s increasing stranglehold over the tie. The Shots looked more composed than on Saturday, but were again unable to find a way through to goal, and Andy Warrington enjoyed a far more comfortable evening than he could have expected. Whilst undoubtedly a disappointing end to the season, it cannot detract from the club’s magnificent over-achievement in getting to the Play-Offs in just their second season of League football. Kevin Dillon has at his disposal a burgeoning young squad, the nucleus of which look well-equipped to compete at the right end of League Two next season. This is but the latest chapter in a remarkable story, and tonight’s setback will not detract from a bright future.
