point apiece might seem scant reward for an evening of such passion and endeavour, but ultimately both sides will have found reasons to be cheerful.

A typically feisty, physical, and occasionally bad-tempered encounter saw Torquay end a run of six consecutive defeats and give a performance which suggests their current League position is a false one; Aldershot were thankful merely to avoid defeat after a dreadfully below-par display.

Still, though, they had dragged themselves to within seven minutes of victory, after riding their luck in a one-sided first half and snatching an unlikely lead, and had Jaimez-Ruiz to thank for an inspired display which kept Torquay at bay.

Paul Buckle fumed at several controversial refereeing decisions, but particularly the two which penalised Tim Sills: first spotting a handball in the penalty area, from which Morgan converted a confident penalty; and then a tangle of legs with Dave Winfield which saw Sills dismissed for diving.
