A resolute defensive display, and a fifth clean sheet in six matches, earned Aldershot Town a place in the FA Cup Third Round draw for just the second time in their history.

On their first half display alone, Tranmere perhaps shaded an open encounter, but thereafter they faded and must now face a replay at The EBB Stadium on Tuesday 8 December.

John Welsh’s swerving 25-yard drive, which cannoned off both posts before being scrambled clear, was the closest either side got to a decisive advantage, but The Shots must be confident of winning through on home turf against a tough but limited League One team.

With more support for lone striker Marvin Morgan, the visitors might even have won the tie at the first attempt, especially as they ended the game stronger and restricted Tranmere to long-range efforts that afforded Jaimez-Ruiz a relatively comfortable afternoon’s work. That, in no small part, was down to another 90 minutes of committed defending from The Shots, with Anthony Charles particularly outstanding.
