Jon-Paul Pittman kept Wycombe Wanderers on course for automatic promotion after having a hand in all three goals against Aldershot.

The three points kept Peter Taylor's side in third place in the League Two table.

However, they could go second as they have a game in hand and are only one point adrift of second-placed Exeter.

John Akinde was in the right place at the right time to fire the Chairboys ahead in the seventh minute at Adams Park.

Pittman's cross was headed against his own post by Dean Howell and Akinde bundled home the loose ball.

Wycombe always held the upper hand until the Shots came close to grabbing an equaliser in the closing stages of the first half when John Grant lashed a long-range shot inches wide of the upright.

But the home side made sure of the points after the interval with a professional performance.

It was 2-0 on 52 minutes when defender Ricky Newman was on hand to convert the rebound after goalkeeper Nikki Bull had saved a rasping shot from man-of-the-match Pittman.

Another dangerous cross from Pittman 15 minutes later set the seal on the victory as Matthew Phillips was the beneficiary when he converted a simple chance.
