Fairclough told BBC Sport, “It is disappointing that Alex felt pressured into stepping down.

“I singled Alex out as a great coach and a great person to work alongside. I can understand why he has gone but I am just sorry it had to happen.”

Fairclough himself has faced the same accusations as manager of League Two side Barnet however he has stated his intention to continue in the post. He told the website, “I intend to carry on. I absolutely love this job and I am proud to do it. I will stay on as long as the FA want me to do it.”

Fairclough will now be searching for a new right hand man ahead of the National Game XI's International tournament with Italy, Belgium and Holland.
